Special Indulgences for the Year of the Priest

Sunday, November 16th, 2008

What is an Indulgence? An indulgence is a special gift offered by God through the Church to help us attain purity of heart and holiness of life.  According to the Chatechism of the Catholic church (1471), an indulgence is “the remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sin whose guilt has already been forgiven”.

A Plenary Indulgence removes all such punishment.  It is best understood in light of Jesus’ promise to be with His Church always and His readiness to provide all we need, including our deep need for full restoration to loving union with God and each other in Christ’s own Mystical Body.  Such indulgences earned by us may be offered for the souls of departed relatives and friends.

During this year, the year designated by our Holy Father as the Year of the Priest, a plenary indulgence may be gained  on certain days by by observing these conditions:

1.  Devoutly attend the divine Sacrifice of Mass in a church or chapel

2.  Offer prayers to Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest for the priests of the Church

3.  Offer any other good work which you may have done on that day, so that Our Lord may sanctify them and form them in accordance with His Heart.

4.  Have a spirit of total detachment from sin

5.  Make a sacramental confession within 2 weeks prior or following the day

6.  Pray for the Holy Father’s intentions

7.  Receive Holy Communion

Plenary indulgences may be gained during this Year of the Priest on the First Thursday of each month and on various other days associated with certain Saints in the calendar of the church (check our Event Calendar for these special days).
